Hey Kirsten. Serena and the other Nuance voices are indeed free. When you download a voice, you'll have a software update dialog box asking you if you want to install the voices you selected. And yes, you can go back to using Alex if you don't like Serena. Simply go toy your VO utilities and go back to speech. then when you go to that pop up with all the voices, select Alex. However there is a faster way of changing stuff like voice, pitch and rate. If you hold the VO and command keys and press any of the arrow keys, you'll go to a roter that will allow you to change this stuff. HTH and welcome to the Mac. By the way, I think Samantha sounds better on here than Serena.
