The easiest way to create a playlist from scratch in your situation is to 
just select the entire album and making sure all of the tracks are selected.  
Then, connamd-shift-n will create a new playlist from the selection.  

     As for time machine, you can use any external HD as long as you have the 
room to do so.  It will create its own backup folder on the drive.  It should 
not interferer with anything else on the drive.
