If you  are using Lion this is very easy.

Simply press VO  command spacebar to toggle selection on and off on an item. .
VO cursor down to the next item you want to select and then press VOcommand 
spacebar again.
VO will say added to selection and tell you the number of items you have 
selected.
I understand that under Snow Leopard and earlier you had to change cursor 
tracking options but as I am a new Mac user who  started   out with Lion I do 
not know how to   . 
On do this under previous operating systems.
