Christine, As Teresa pointed out, on the main Facebook site, three numbers appear which notify a user if one has new messages, notifications, and friend requests. VO+space on these numbers makes the information associated with said number appear.
Also, a few weeks ago the Facebook Team announced that in order to "save users' in box" people would no longer receive e-mail notifications to the same extent they had been receiving them. Instead, Facebook would send e-mail notifications only if it determined it was important based on how many "likes" or "comments" a status or post received. However, FB allows one to change this under account setting preferences if one wishes to continue receiving e-mail notifications on every single thing which is what I do. I hope that helps.
