Ummm. What might work better is if you have Skype or some other IM client, I could talk you through it. It's a fairly standard file chooser dialog, and it sounds like you're familiar with that already, so I'm wondering if something else is going on here, or if perhaps this pane has changed in Lion? If you're running Lion? Once you choose "Open file," from the custom submenu the rest should be straightforward; you should just be able to VO right into the file browser, hit T for TextEdit, and then go over and hit the "Choose," button.
