If you are doing this in gmail, do look at your All mail folder; if your deleted messages are remaining behind in there, you may have thousands of them. that happened to me before I realized that deleting messages in traditional IMAP does not work the same way in gmail. They have to be moved to Trash to truely be rid of them.
