please could you find out for me what spec macbook this is and it's date / 
model?

macbooks by their very nature are capable of running snow leopard but will 
struggle on lion. as OS X 10.6 is intel based, the macbooks were intel chips, 
the reason your disks won't work on his machine is due to the fact the disks 
are prepared for your version machine so are locked to the machine serial 
identifier.

the only way to do this is to find a copy of snow leopard for sale. I have my 
retail DVD here but sending it out would take a long time to the USA from 
previous experience.
