Hi, Lisette. I'm not able to change the size of the vertical splitter much, but apparently when it's at the smaller size, the mailboxes table becomes visible again--at least, that's how this MBP works. Might have changed beyond recognition in Lion; I'm running Snow Leopard. But it sounds like you've interacted with it just fine, and that's the level of its functionality. See if either of those settings makes your Mailboxes table reappear.
