This one usually happens if you attempt to Quit the Mail app to quickly after 
deleting the messages.  If that's not the case, go into your Mail Prefs and 
select the GMail account, press on the Mailbox Behaviours tab and check your 
Trash settings.  Make sure that both items are checked.  That is, Move Deleted 
items to the Trash and Store Deleted Items on the Server.
