Hi, GMail automatically removes deleted messages after 30 days anyway so storing them on the server is not a problem. Google does something called Archiving instead of actually deleting them. In that same area of the Mail Prefs, how quickly does Mail delete your messages. Set it for one month and there should be any conflict with GMail servers.
