Yes, if you run Lion or Mountain Lion, you can start your computer from the 
hidden recovery partition.

Shut down your computer.
Power it back on and immediately hold down command+r keys. The computer should 
boot from the recovery partition. 
Note! Give it some good while because at this stage you have no speech. 
Then activate Voiceover with command+f5. You will gett a different voice here 
so don't panic.
You will be placed on the table of available applications/functions. Interact.
At the bottom of the list you will find disk utility application. Stop 
interacting with the table and move right to press go button if I remember 
correctly.
Disk utility will be launched. From there you can repair permissions, and 
verify disk. If there is a problem, you will be given a chance to repair it.
