Lindsay, As ricardo has said, you can disable the existing spotlight shortcut key combination in system preferences, keyboard pain. Then you can assign to spotlight window a different key combination. I have done so successfully. It is fairly easy. Remember though, if you wish to create a new key combination for spotlight, first you have to enable them again before you enter the new shortcut keystrokes in the field. Otherwise it will be dimmed.
