I don't know if this is the right way to do things, or if it will work in your situation, but I recently had to take control of another user's files on my wife's computer. At any rate, if you open up the folder in Finder, you can navigate to the file. Do a [vo][shift][m] on the file and choose "Get Info." In that dialogue box you have the ability to set permissions. The interesting part of this dialogue box is the "action" button. When you press it, you can have the permission changes you have made apply to all subsequent files and folders.
I am wondering if this may be helpful as you may have set the sharing permissions on the parent folder and those permissions have not cascaded down to the child folders. May be worth a try.
