Just one slight addition here. Make sure that you double-click the trackpad or 
else nothing will happen. When I did it, VO didn't have anything to say, but 
when you do VO left or right arrow, it will say different things than what 
you'd heard previously. And it turns out that I had disabled the preview pane, 
but it came back with the most recent update. So upon repeating these actions, 
surprise! VO began announcing the unread status of messages properly again.
