Hi Cheryl My old apple ear buds work find with my mac book pro 2011. Even the microphone. The volume works for both vo and audio. Try playing around in system preferences/sounds. When I plug the Apple ear buds in the devices table shows that automatically and it seems to be the only one available then. You have to push them in quite hard or they won't work. Good luck. Maybe someone else can help more.
