Hi Nancy I am using dictation on my MacBook Pro. I use it sometimes, even though I have no trouble with my hands. What type of Mac do you have? I ask because if you have a MacBook Pro like mine, if you press the function key twice, you will get a big noise so you can start dictation. It's a lot like Siri on the iPhone, in that you say the words for period and comma. I have to do some correction, but it's not a lot. Undermountain lion, you get to speak for a little while, and then you hear another beat noise. That tells you that you've reached the memory limit. Then you just wait for voice over to tell you what you putting and talk some more. When I wanted to set mine up, I press the function key twice, and the first time the computer asked me for set up information. So, I didn't have to go to preferences or anything. You might try that.Gigi
