Of course, then you have to reinstall any third party apps, and all your data files need to be backed up first, right?

Sounds like an extreme remedy of last resort. Are there benefits to doing so that make it worth the bother?

Hi phil.
WHen you boot in to the restore part of your drive, and go to disc utility. In there you can erase your macintosh hd drive and then just click re-install lion or mountain lion which ever you have.
