Dear Listers, I hope this is not too far out of topic subject. I'm experiencing problems with my time capsule and the need to backup from two different mac computers. The difficulties are as follows: I have a first generation time capsule with 500 GB hard drive. I also have two mac computers but they are run by two different users: i.e. myself and another user on a separate mac computer.
Because my time capsule has only a 500 GB hard drive, I decided to buy an external usb hard drive which I have connected to the time capsule by the usb port available. My thinking behind was that I would back up one computer to the time capsule hard drive, and the other to the external usb hard drive connected to the usb port of the time capsule. It all seemed to be logical. I researched it - so I thought - but the trouble is that every couple of days, my backups stop and the other users backups stop because time machine fails to find the disks. So there is obviously a problem which I have spent hours to resolve, and I'm frankly fed up now. I would reselect the appropriate drives to which backup, I would do it repeatedly, and it would be fine for a bit but then again the same thing happens. I do not know what to do next. So I'm about to conclude that the solution with the usb attached external drive is not gonna work. Maybe my first generation time capsule is too old and can't cope with the 1 TB external usb drive attached to it, or else time machine doesn't seem to know which disk to choose. I was wondering then, unless there's something I'm doing wrong, whether to find a solution so that I would attach my usb external drive via an ethernet adaptor to the router itself or to the ethernet port of the time capsule rather than the usb port on the capsule? My question is, therefore, do you think it is possible? Can one attach a usb external drive to an ethernet port on time capsule or router? Is there an external hard drive that would have an ethernet connection that would enable me to attach it to the router or time capsule and that would be recognised by my mac computers? Another concern I have is that I have failed to configure the two mac computers correctly to use the right disks in the setup. I'd welcome any suggestions. Please write off list if this is a topic too far here. With many thanks. Andrew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group.
