Hi Andrew, A couple of things come to mind. I used to have a 1st Gen TC before it cratered. There was a common issue with those units where they kind of overheated, affecting some chips on the logic board, then they'd lose connectivity either to the HD or with the actual networking hardware. This could be happening to your unit thus causing the intermittent problems. If you've given each of the HDs, both the internal TC HD and the USB connected HD different names and have instructed each computer to backup to the specific HD, then you shouldn't experience issues that way either.
Most network storage devices I've seen, at least in Canada here, aren't particularly cheap. You may find that connecting a network storage device to your TC to be more expensive than simply purchasing a newer, faster TC or Airport Extreme and connecting your existing external 1 TB HD. One way to test things is to disconnect your external HD for a few days. The computer that backs up to the internal HD of the TC will continue to back up fine and if there's an overheating issue, it will persist. After your test period, reconnect the USB HD to the TC and see what happens. This should isolate things a little so you can determine where the problem may lie. HTH. Later...
