This is a tricky one. I use a NAS, but your using USB. Go in to system prefs and make sure sharing all folders, this should take care of it.

Before I had purchased the airport extreme, I had researched it to reassure myself that indeed I could use time machine to backup to an external hard drive attached to it. However, time machine doesn't seem to recognise the hard drive. Has anyone else had this difficulty? I can see all my external hard drive's partition in finder and can mount them on the desktop but time machine refuses to list it in the table of available disks. Have I made a mistake by thinking that i could use airport extreme and an external hard drive to accomplish this? I use macbook air with mountai lion and airport extra 5th generation - the latest model. I have done some research on the internet having come across this problem and I can see some articles that imply that Apple has never clearly said that airport extreme with an external hard drive attached could serve as a time machine backup destination. Have I made an expensive mistake? I'd appreciate any helpful feedback. Many thanks Andrew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group.
