Dear Listers,

I've researched a little bit more, and Ive found an answer to my dilemma. It's
rather complicated but hopefully the result will stick. I can see from the page
I've found that Apple continues to discourage performing time machine backups
onto an external drive connected to airport extreme but the same page has also
offerred a solution. It was ultimately quite simple. I needed to mount the
partition onto which I want to do backups on the desktop and then launch time
machine preferences. Only then did it show the disk I wanted to choose for
backups. It is backing up as I write.

I must admit that Apple's reluctance to support this method does worry me a
bit. I hope that the airport extreme 5th generation is not going to let me down.

I hope I've not cluttered the list too much with my dilemmas.

With best wishes

Andrew
