Hi, VO will only normally announce if a message is still unread. If you've already read it, it will simply read the other info such as Sender, Subject and Date/Time. If you did have the Preview pane enabled when you initially browsed through your messages, then they will be considered "read" and remain as already read messages even if you turn off the Preview pane after the fact. This should be true whether you are in Normal or Classic view. Just for a test though, you could navigate to one of your messages, don't open it, then press cmd-shift-u which is the command for marking the read/unread status of a message. Try that and see if VO will announce if a message is unread. If it does not, usually that means that your Preview pane is still active. How have you confirmed that it is turned off?
