Mary, There is no need to pay Apple $200 to do something that you can do yourself at home. Remember that unlike on Windows we can reinstall the operating system ourselves without any sighted assistance what so ever.
What makes you think that your Mac has an infection? I believe that it is highly unlikely that your Mac has a virus but as we all know just because we are using a Mac does not mean that we are immune.
