I've had the same problem in the past on several lists. What I have done to
alieviate the trouble is set up a separate mailbox folder for each list and
make a email rule to send list messages into their own folders.
I can then easily go through all the list messages one by one without
opening them, but by the subject decide whether to delete them or keep them
for reading.
It works, and good luck getting people to comply with your request, in my
experience, it ain't going to happen. Better to have separate folders for
list messages in my opinion.

Could people please try and ensure they are not quoting conversation history
or previous posts in their posts.
I receive the threads in digest mode, and Mail therefore doesn't block out
the quoted conversation history. It makes it really difficult when I have to
read through the whole conversation history every time to get to the next
post. Especially as this keeps getting longer and longer, it can become a
nightmare for the really popular threads.
I'm sure this is an issue for other people as well, and for viewing on the
website.
So please, please, either edit Mail preferences so it doesn't automatically
quote the original message, or just select all (Command-A) and then delete
before you type your reply. Given that most email services these days
support conversation threading, I'm not sure what the point is anymore of
quoting the original messages. But if it's something you really love to do,
then please just delete it for this particular list.
