There are some uses as have been mentioned but at least in my case they are so rare that I have keyboard commander set for both option keys and if I require the option key either pass through, turn off commander hotkey or VO f8 command 8 and set it to left option temporarily.
This suits me but won't be suitable for some people as we all have different ways of doing things.
