I'm not sure what you're trying to record or what your Mac configuration is (Mac Mini or
laptop Mac, available USB ports, line-in, etc.). Are you saying that you're using your
line-in to connect the input sound device to your computer, so you don't have a way to
independently monitor the sound level coming in with your headphones? You can use a
Griffin iMic to let you plug your input or output audio source into the iMic and connect
to your Mac through a USB port. These run for about $25 at Amazon, and mine dates from
when I got my first Mac and wanted to digitize old cassette tapes, so it's about 8 years
old and still works. I used the iMic with Amadeus Pro to record. You could also put a
Y-connector on your audio source so you can hook in headphones that way. There's also a
very convenient free program, named "LineIn", that you can download from the
Rogue Amoeba freebies page:

You can use this app to direct the sound output that you've plugged into your line-in to
your Mac's speakers. Most recording and editing programs have a pass-through feature for
this kind of monitoring, but this function is not built into the Mac's audio system by
default. Select Input from Built-In Line In and send Output to Default System Output.
Then VO-Space on the "pass-thru" checkbox.
If you are using Audio Hijack Pro for multiple sources, you generally first
hijack system audio, and then individual applications. If you want to hijack
the system audio without VoiceOver, you'll have to mute VO. As Teresa says, I
don't think you can leave VoiceOver out of the system audio recordings.
Here's another suggestion. Many of the questions you are asking came up when
Anna Dresner joined the list for a brief time four years ago. She wanted to
make a teaching podcast using Audio Hijack Pro, although she actually both
wanted to have a demo of an iPod device, and record with VoiceOver. Use the
Mail Archive web search for this list. I'll point you to one of the archived
posts I gave her in reply, pointing her to an old podcast about using Audio
Hijack Pro:

In addition to reading that page for content, navigate to the search text box
and type in:
from:Woody hijack
and press return. There are less than a dozen results. (She posted as "Woody Anna
Dresner", so I used the first word as the argument for the "from:" search keyword,
which has a colon immediately after the word. You can use any word in the posting name to search by
the poster, or the full name if you put the entire name in quotation marks, but it's best to choose
a word that gives unique results.)
Activate the links with the various post subjects to read the full posts, then
read up or down the threads with Control-N or Control-P. You'll get most of
the questions she asked and the responses on topics like how best to stop the
recording, and was there any way to get rid of the 30 second delay in listening
to combined hijacked tracks.

if that's possible, as I haven't done it. I mostly record radio programs, so I
use application sources. You can specify several of them in one session, but
