The line in jack is the microphone jack. Macs do not support unpowered 
microphones - you either need a powered one, or a USB sound card to use these. 
It's annoying, but I read somewhere that the reason has to do with the 
reliability and sound quality of powered mics - after all, Macs are generally 
aimed at artists and other people who would appreciate the difference, or at 
least they used to be.
