Seems it's only possible to get PDFs into iBooks Author by copying and pasting the text. As the books I'm talking about are thousands of pages long this wouldn't really be feasible. Word and Pages documents can be imported into iBooks Author with each file becoming a new chapter. This is exactly what I'd want for PDFs. I might be able to OCR convert them to word documents and then import them, though this might get a little ugly. Will look into it more if/when I get an iPad.
