I first went into iPhoto\General preferences and set the "connecting camera
opens" setting to ImageCapture. Then when I connect my iPhone to the MAC, it
automatically opens ImageCapture, where it used to open iPhoto as the
default application. I am placed in the table containing the available
photos and videos to import from my iPhone5, and the scanners and cameras
table is set to my iPhone5.
Try setting ImageCapture as the default device as noted above. Of course, if
you don't have any photos or videos on the phone, IC won't open on connect.

Nope? all I get is devices which if I expand, it just springs back
collapsed again, then I see shared which I don't think has nothing under it,
then I see my scanner and that is literally it in the entire table. Just
devices hide expanded triangle, Shared hide expanded triangle, Desk jet
3050AJ 611 series, and that is literally it. Both the devices and the
shared items are expanded according to Voiceover.
My phone's screen is unlocked, I have a almost totally charged battery, the
phone is powered on, and is is correctly connected to my mac mini via the
USB to lightning cable which is not defected in the least as ITunes is
seeing the phone perfectly. Whether ITunes is running or not is making
absolutely no difference what so ever. I rebooted the phone just in case,
and nothing happened. I also rebooted the mac and nothing happened. The
USB port is not defected as other devices work flawlessly consistently when
plugged into it. I tried plugging that same cable into another USB port,
and also have tried switching to another lightning cable with no success.
I'm practically trying everything.

When the iPhone is connected, it appears in the devices area of Image
Capture. Stop interacting and go right. There will be a list of your
pictures and some unlabeled buttons. YOu will eventually find a place
where you can choose where to import your pictures via a popup button and
an import button and an import all button.

OK, I'll admit that normally, I use my Windows machine with the scan and
fax wizard to transfer pictures off of my IPhone 5 to a jpg file on my
actual computer. I have somewhat figured out in IPhoto how to do this on
the Mac, but I've had about three of four people on this list who have
absolutely insisted that I am practically stupid for not seeing this, but
they claim that I can use Image Capture to transfer photos from my
IPhone. They told me they understand that this app normally is for
capturing pictures from a scanner which is attached or from a webcam etc,
but it also would do this as well. OK, well you all are gonna have to
tell me what I'm missing then. I've looked everywhere that I know there
is to look within the app, and do not see any way to make this happen.
All that I see in my devices table is my scanner, and that's pretty much
it. Yes, I did try to expand the devices category within the table up at
the top, and yes, I made sure the disclosure triangle was toggled to
show, and not to hide. I thought maybe I needed to enable something in
the preferences to make it look for IPhones, but that didn't work, as
there is no preferences dialog in this app to start with. I even quit
ITunes wondering if that had something to do with it, and before doing
so, I went to the photos tab of my IPhone in ITunes and insured that sync
photos was unchecked, although frankly, that wouldn't really matter, as
sync photos within ITunes is mainly only used to sync pictures from your
mac to the phone, not the other way around. My thing is I don't want to
use IPhoto either because I have about 12 pictures on my phone and
obviously, neither IPhoto nor IOS gives them any sort of descriptive
names by default. For this reason, I don't really know which picture is
which, so now going back trying to rename them is going to be a major
pain the ass. Not only that, but I'm not really very proficient with
IPhoto, which doesn't help matters. I do have some pictures however that
are very important I need to get out of the phone. Yeah, I could just
e-mail them to myself, but that kind of defeats the whole purpose, not to
mention is quite inconvenient at times. I suppose that theoretically I
could just upload them with my Dropbox app to the photos directory as I
do have the app on my phone. I'd just have to go set it to automatically
upload photos as I shut that off. There's gotta be an easier way though.
I can't believe how simple it is on Windows to do this compared to on the
Mac. It just seems like in OSX, there are so many more hoops I have to
jump through to get this done, which is extremely aggravating.
Anyway, if anyone knows anything, let me know.
Chris.
