I don't know if it ever hit the market or if it never got off the ground, but I remember hearing that Behringer made one called the ULM100 that was supposed to be USB and wireless. I haven't yet found it available anywhere, but not sure how much background something like that would pick up because it's probably made more for recording than anything, but $99 isn't too bad if it was available.

Subject: Re: good wireless mic for dictation?

Unfortunately, due to physical limitations, the client must have either a wireless microphone or a laptop with a wired microphone, and the wireless option would be much cheaper and easier. I saw many mics listed on Dragon's website as having good dictation, and they were all wireless, so I'm hoping that the right mic will work. As I said, I'd like to use a USB mic, but that is simply impossible in this situation, unfortunately. The IVX mics I'm looking at offer an in-home free trial, so that, coupled with the voice prompts and 94% cancellation of background noise (so they claim), makes this a ver attractive option. Plus, this model is not $300 to $500 like many I saw while researching, and I'd like to keep costs down for the client if I can. Finally, this model offers 20 hours of talk time, which is remarkable in a bluetooth audio device. I have no experience in microphones at all, so was hoping people knew of some good ones or some to stay away from as I decide on a recommendation to give the client.

Oh, &, yes. I did notice your subject line here. However, I'd totally agree with Ricardo here. Wireless mics are worthless when it comes to dictation. There is to much noise in them, to much background noise which will cause most dictation to be lost & have to be done over & over again. Unless you're willing to spend 1000 1500 dollars on a good set of wireless mics, don't waist your time with them.

I'm assuming that since you asked this question on this list, we're talking about a Mac user? I'd suggest an Audio Technica ATR2100 Mic. This mic is a very good quality mic for not alot of buck. In fact, this is the mic which has made waves in the podcast community over the last year or so. In fact, I've taken to using it as a mic in my home studio for recording my news & traffic reports as well as in the field for conducting interviews with, which are aired on 4 radio stations. For dictation, you're really interested in a dynamic mic, this sort of mic is one which you'll need to talk directly in to commonly used in the broadcast industry, this sort of mic cuts out background noise, around you noise. verses what a normal USB mic is which is a condenser mic. Condensers are mostly used in larger invernments for grabbing a greater amount of ambiance & noise during a broadcast. &, they're also less expensive to manufacturer. Not going to go more overboard in technical specs of mics than that. If you're more interested, you're more than welcome to write me off list. Also, if you're interested in hearing this mic in action. You may also write me as well. Yes, the neat thing about the 2100 is that it is both a USB & an XLR connection mic & both can be in use at the same time. Also, the mic comes with a headphone jack on it's bottom/back for monitoring your output audio if not being run through a mixer. I'd bring this mic to any mic fight & put it up against any of the big boys from Heil, Sure or Electro-Voice. No, I don't sell these mics or work for Audio Technica in any way. I just like this mic at its price point. Which is now down to around 40 dollars on Amazon. Put a good pop filter on it as you should with any dynamic mic & you're off & running.

Subject: OT: good wireless mic for dictation?

Hi all,
I am working with someone who uses Dragon on a daily basis, but has only a bluetooth headset meant for a phone. Needless to say, Dragon does not do well with this low-quality mic, so I'm hoping to suggest a better one. Ideally, it would be either bluetooth or RF, include one or two speakers, and have voice prompts. I am leaning toward the Blue Parrot, since it has A2DP, voice prompts, a single button, and good range, plus is relatively inexpensive and has a score of 4 from Nuance. However, I am quite happy to take other recommendations for good microphones that do noise-canceling, are wireless headsets, and, if possible, have voice prompts. This is a bit off-topic, I realize, but I know some of you do a lot of dictation so I figured here was a good place to ask this. Also, I am hoping to one day convert this person to the Mac, so there's that. :) Thanks for any advice.

Have a great day,
