Dear Tim thanks for the info. I activated the OK default button for Karen and when software update didn’t come upI went back to the voice list. Abovecompact Daniel was downloading Karen dimmed,I waited for a while but in the end the downloading Karen option disappeared all together. When you say you can download multiple voices using the default voice pop up and ok default button is this not mislabelled because they can’t all be defaults?

If you press VO-space (VO means ctrl-optio) on the Default Voice pop-up then arrow down through the list, after Customize, VO will read more voices and will say “So and so Downloading” if a voice is being downloaded at that time. I believe that it only downloads one voice at a time and will continue downloading voices even when the VO Utility is not open. Once the voice has completed downloading, you are able to choose it as your default. When you choose Customize and navigate through the table of additional voices, you can press VO-space to check as many voices as you wish to add to your system. Once you’ve got all the voices checked that you want, stop interacting with the table and navigate to the OK button then press it. As I mentioned above, you can use that process to determine which voices are downloading and, eventually, they should all be added to your system. Regarding how to wake your MBA, just open the lid and it awakens. You’ll likely need to press return or tap once on the trackpad to bring focus to the authentication window where you can enter your password. My main problem now is I can't install an enhanced voice. When I first activated voice over it seemed to be using an enhanced voice, and then when I registered my apple ID it went back to compact, and this was before I had been anywhere near the voice over utility. I have listened to the podcast on applevis about installing an enhanced voice, but I can't get it to work. It is probably something silly that I am not doing. I have been able to play the enhanced quality voice for Karen twice, and then moved to the right both times, the first time it said OK default dimmed, and the second time it said Ok default implying that it could be activated, but then control option space just results in"closing dialog" and does not launch software update as per the podcast. Can some kind soul give me a list of every keypress after loading the vo utility to downloding the voice, baring in mind that I have been in there and it seems to remember where I was. When you select to change the default voice does that mean you can only download one voice because only one can be the default? Would it not be better to be able to download the voices you want, and then select the default from those? At a tangent how do you wake a macbook from sleep? What is happening here is that there are 2 levels of function keys. By default they are hardware controls i.e. volume and brightness. So by pressing Function key + VO + F8 will get you there. The Function is next to the VO keys. Thus you just need to hold the bottom left-hand 3 keys and then press F8 and let go. I can't get control option f8 to bring up the voice over utility no matter how many times I try,, a sighted person has also tried and it does not work. Does the focus have to be somewhere special to make this work? How do you turn off the macbook do you use the on off button or is there a way in OSX itself, a shut down button? Can Someone explain very simply the difference between the functions of control option and the arrow keys, control option command and the arrow keys, control option shift and the arrow keys because maybe I'm thick but I don't get it! is it possible to download voices without using the voice over utility? I am suddenly not hating freedom scientific quite so much. OK just a couple of ideas! 1, do you have both option keys set to use with keyboard commander! 2, Just try switching off keyboard commander with VO+shift+k and see if the option key things like € • and others! I've found if you need to use those items it is best to toggle on or off keyboard commander when needed! However, if I try to navigate by word with option left or right arrow, it doesn't work. The cursor just doesn't move and voiceover doesn't say anything. I can use command arrow to navigate, or just the arrow keys themselves, but not using option. i also can't use it to enter special characters, like accents and such. But it does work when I use it for keyboard commander to open certain applications. So it seems very selective about when it works or not. I don't understand why this is happening. Any ideas?
