Time machine kicks off about one an hour to backup anything that has
changed. First thing it does is check to make sure the backup drive is
there. If not it fails silently and tries again in another hour. So, as
Tim said, the impact of leaving TM on should be pretty minimal.

Hi Tim, thanks for your answer.
Kawal, yes my MBP will be off the mains and I shut it down when not in use. I
was just simply wondering when we use Bluetooth or wi-fi these technolagys do
drain battery power more when in use. So knowing that I just wondered if
leaving Time Machine on would also drain the battery more like the above two
technologies.
I hope that now makes more sense.
Sorry if you don’t understand what I mean.

Hi,
No, it will not affect battery life at all.

Hi all, I got a portable external hard drive for christmas and have been using
it with Time Machine which I have a question about.
If I were to leave Time Machine on but not have my portable hard drive
connected, would this still drain the battery on my Mac Book Pro?
This is just a question that I was curious about. Like Bluetooth and wi-fi can
drain one’s battery if left on all the time could this happen to Time Machine
as well?
I look forward to what you gys have to say about this.
Thanks
