Karen, based on what I understand you are saying, you should be able to do it. 
I used to have more problems with that, but that got corrected. Now they on 
screen keyboard comes up and you can hear VoiceOver while those awful computers 
are still talking and won't shut up. I have found it sometimes to be a little 
easier to use the earphones, but that's not essential. Like I said, this used 
to be a problem, and I think that's why you were told it couldn't be easily 
done.
