The easiest way to find and launch apps on the Mac is Spotlight. Just cmd-space, start typing disk utility, and after a few letters you'll hear "top hit, Disk utility". Press enter and it opens up. I launch everything this way - my desktop is empty, my dock nearly so. It doesn't work for everyone, of course, but it is a great way to find a newly downloaded app or find one whose location you don't know.
