Yes, my mac is set up this way.

All I did was partician  my hard drive with disc utility, then installed 
Maverics.

note, in my case when I put an OS on an external it moved very slowly, it was a 
pain to me.
Go into preferences, tab to start up disc and pick whitch one you wish to start 
with.
