I suspect the remote CD stuff is running afoul of the encryption and
region encoding of commercial DVDs. I have used a firewire DVD drive on
a MacMini with no issues so it sounds like some intentional or
accidental omission of encryption support.

I can't say for sure. I've loaded Windows into a virtual machine using
Remote Disk, no problem. I tried to play a DVD in iTunes using the
same setup, and it refused. Google has plenty on the subject, so you
might want to look up the exact type of thing you are planning to do.
Still, Remote Disk is free and available on Mac and Windows, so it
costs nothing but time to give it a shot.

Alex,
the only thing I'd want to do is load software instruments onto, say,
an external SSD drive. could I use this Remote Disk function to do
that if the original libraries were on DVDs? Sounds like I should be
able to.
thanks,
Kevin

I use Remote Disk as well and love it. One Apple-imposed limitation
you need to know, though, is that this app will not work for media.
You can load all the software or documents you want, but try to send
audio or video over the local network with Remote Diska nd you'll
get errors. Sorry if a previous message mentioned this, I wasn't
following the thread too closely.

Dear Kayaker,
that's really helpful. I have a 2010 Mac Mini that I could use as
the CD drive to load my software. That will save me some dough.
Best,
Kevin

Hi,
All those answers are correct. In regards to the CD/DVD question,
I'll add a bit more. You can either add an external USB DVD drive,
or use the "Remote Disk" option. This option allows you to use a
drive on another Mac or a PC and mount it as if it were a CD on
your mini. This assumes you're on the same network. There is an
application to allow this to happen on windows that can be
downloaded from the apple site, or it is enabled from System
Preferences, Sharing, on Macs with a DVD drive attached.

Hi Kevin,
I have just bought a new Mac mini and the answer to your
questions are as follows:
1. The new Mac Mini does not come with a built in optical drive.
2. I believe the maximum amount of memory which can be fitted is 16gb
3. Although I set up my mini whilst it was connected to a
monitor, I have since tried it with the monitor disconnected, it
runs fine with no monitor and voiceover running.
Hope this helps,.
Steve.

Guys,
I have three questions:
1. do new Mac Minis have CD ROM drives anymore? I'm thinking
of buying a new one to replace my aging XP DAW, and wonder how
I'm going to get all my soft synth libraries installed if there
is no CD-ROM drive on the machine. the specs my wife read to me
made no mention of a CD-DVD drive.
2. the next question is this, what is the maximum amount of RAM
Apple will put in a Mac Mini? Is it 8GB or 16GB?
3. I bought my first Mac Mini in 2010 and tried to run it
without a Monitor. As I recall, I was successful. but I recall
there being some discussion about how Mac Minis of that era ran
sluggishly or not at all with VO if a monitor was not connected.
For reasons of portability, I would like the option of being
able to use my Mac Mini without a monitor if I happen to be in a
place where a suitable monitor isn't available, but all the rest
of my easily transportable stuff, small MIDi keyboard, small
flash drives, etc are in my small backpack. Does anyone know if
current Mac Minis can or can't use VoiceOver in the absence of a
monitor?
Thanks,
Kevin
