Hello Reggie, The preview pane is where the body of the message is displayed. If you use VO-j to jump to the body of the message, you're jumping to the preview pane.
The downside of displaying the preview pane for VO users is that when you navigate down to a message, it opens automatically so you can never skip over a message to read it later and have it show up as unread. I have always got rid of the preview pane because I prefer to choose which messages I want to read and when.
