Hello Reggie, To read a message, press Return, and if you're using a Braille display, interact and you'll be able to navigate normally.
To get rid of the preview pane, navigate to the horizontal splitter if you're in classic view, bring the mouse (VO-Cmd-F5), with track pad commander off, press down on the track pad with one finger, and stroke down the way with another. That should get rid of it. I should think that navigating to the vertical splitter to the right of the messages table and swiping right with one finger should do the same job in modern view but I haven't tried that as I always use classic view.
