You have to switch out of the GUI (X11 with Gnome, KDE or whatever) to the
main system console (text mode). Usually that's the first console, which
you can reach via ALT + F1. Log in, then type the command to create a
monitor VAP and see if you get a lenghtly message printed to the window.
That would be the oops message I was refering to earlier.
Another test: comment out the {{{pre-up}}} line in
/etc/network/interfaces, then reboot your computer. MadWifi should be
loaded as usual, but the STA VAP won't be created automatically. Press ALT
+ F1 again, log in, create the monitor VAP. Does your system hang in this
situation as well?
