Comment (by mentor):

 This patch removes automagic addition of a unit (wlanunit) number to
 interface names, when a VAP is created in kernel. It also modifies
 wlanconfig with a new option '-u' that stops automatic searches for the
 lowest unit number for a base interface name. The searches are performed
 using the Linux /proc interface.

 This patch compiles but is not tested, as I'm not in the same country as
 my madwifi machine, and it's my gateway so I can't fuck it up. So someone
 else should pick this up and test for stupid segfaults all over the place.
