Nicely written problem report, this was easy to track down.
The problem was that madwifi was interpreting the "iwconfig ath0 ap any"
command as an attempt to find an AP with MAC address ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff.
This was contrary both to the documentation for the iwconfig command, and
to good sense.
As a workaround, you can use "iwconfig ath0 ap off", which will do what
you want it to do. Or you can apply this patch.
