Comment:

 Extremely short link distances (such as 1m) are known to sometimes cause
 problems. There's a broad range of effects that show up, all of them
 caused by the receivers being overdriven. I suggest you increase the
 distance between both boxes a bit, just to be sure (although I'm not sure
 if this is the real root of your problems).

 You say you need to reboot your machines. Is this because they are locked
 up? If they are not locked up, did you try to shut down the wireless
 interfaces, reload all MadWifi-related modules and bring the interfaces
 back up?

 Do you have other motherboards you can test this setup in? It would be
 good to know that the motherboards are not the cause of your problems.
