Hello Madwifi
This is not a support question, I am beyond that
I followed the instructions from the MadWifi 'First Time User' HOWTO http
://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/FirstTimeHowTo
and I had no succes
I find that a pity, it does not do justice to the hard work that people do
to contribu to this Madwifi project.
And for me, getting used to difficult installation procedures, I think
"sh.t, another setback on my linux machine"
Let me first explain my situation, than I have some comments on the
content of madwifi.org and some questions.
I use windows, suse9.0 and debian(knoppix),
We (my family) use the suse laptop for schoolwork of my daughter,
We use openOffice2.0 for her papers. It took me 2 mounth to get the
printer working (canon IP1500).
My girlfriend uses the suse laptop to read her mail. She also makes
presentations for het dayJob, works fine.
I have to use windows at work.
I would like to use the Suse Laptop also on my wifi network. Now I use my
(windows) laptop from work on my wifi network and 'no problem'.
As I said I followed the MadWifi 'First Time User' HOWTO instructions,
and followed the instructions from http
://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/Distro/SuSE by Patrick
I ran into the error : "Makefile.inc:119: ***KERNELCONF:
/lib/modules/2.6.13.15.8-default/build/.config does not exist.. stop"
I used the script SuseBuild from Alexander Pevzner but it gave me the same
result.
On the same webPage there is a description for this .config problem for
Suse 10.0
"
SUSE does not include the kernel .config file, which is annoying, but
easily fixed:
- install kernel sources and header and symbols (I do not know whether you
need all of this)
- cd /usr/src/linux
- make cloneconfig && make prepare-all
And you are done....
"
So I tried:
In YAST I found the kernel sources to instal, I installed them, I did not
found the header and the symbolds in YAST
the command - "make cloneconfig && make prepare-all" produces so much
logging messages I could not found what the result was, at the end it gave
no error so I assumed it went OK.
The result was that when I ran the "script SuseBuild from Alexander
Pevzner" there still was this error
:/lib/modules/2.6.13.15.8-default/build/.config
I checked about this directory, the build was there, as a symbolic lnk but
it poited to a directory whitch had no .config.
Cause I just type the commands from the instructions and have a vague idee
what might happen, but I do not know where I make permanend terminal
damage.
I looked over the FAQ and forums, but all solutions looked simular , no
new ideas.
So here I stopped.
I would like to make the following remarkt: " In my opinion when there is
an instruction this instruction should be accurate, otherwise you should
present it an an experiance from a user for his particular situation."
In my situation , no headers no symbols no succes with the commands, that
should not be happening, when you give an instruction you should go into
more detail and more backGround.
Second remark:"why not give ready-to-go rpm's for a lot of known distro's
and kernels? You, workers on madwifi, you are already so deep in this, why
not compile and make a lot of rpm's? "
I have read the story on the .config "Why is the kernel source required to
build Madwifi?"
Greg Chesson writes "You could argue that we should have retained the
original build procedure with madwifi-specific makefiles in the driver.
However, the rapid pace of change with kernel build procedures when 2.6
came along made this an intractable problem for us."
I can't find his problem in just compile it for a lot of popular distro's.
This would make this technology whithin reach of a larger group of people,
take me FI, I do not have the time to spend days on the internet trying to
find a solution for each linux feature i want to use. I did that for the
printer, at last it works.
I know installations should not be so hard, why is a so complicated
enviroment like "sun java creator2" so easy to install in linux? how about
installation of fireFox? no big deal, OpenOffice2.0 also works fine, no
instal problems there, there is this keyboardserver progran Synergy2 , is
crossPlatform and works fine for me. Picasa, works easy.
In my dayjob I am a java programmer and need to learn about the new stuff
in that architecture. I cant spend all my free time working on issues i do
not have in windows (or mac's)
Thanks for reading,
I look forward to your comments/reactions.
