#923: .config file not in source directory

i have xubuntu on my system
the install does not have a source directory so i downloaded the correct
version of the source and un tarred it to usr/src/linux-source2.x.y
this got over the kernal path error
however the next error when trying t make madwifi was that it could not
find the .config file in the path/to/kernel/source/.config
there is no config file here when you download the source for xubuntu
kernel
i noticed there was a config file in /root/
do you know how to get round this - i feel like I am one step away from
installing the drivers , its taken a very long time to get to this stage ,
but as there is no config file in the source dir then what do i do to make
install ?
