The problem most probably comes from the kernel module ath5k which is
alternate driver for Atheros chipsets.
Go to /lib/modules/KERNEL_VERSION/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ath5k
and rename the file ath5k.so to ath5k.so.bak
execute
depmod -a
unload the module
modprobe -r ath5k
reinstall madwifi
and you have a working madwifi driver ;)
