I can confirm this problem as well, running Debian Etch standard kernel
and madwifi package:
madwifi-source 0.9.2+r1842.20
I too made a script to ifconfig ath0 down; remove all madwifi and wlan
modules; ifconfig ath0 up and it seems to work, although I have only
tested a few dozen times so far.
