Ah, I suspect I have managed to connect the symptom with the problem now.
The ath5k modules need blacklisting. I suspect that even loading then will
cause the madwifi HAL to be unable to initialise the device causing a HAL
status 3. Apparently, resetting hardware is hard.
I shall make sure that the documentation is updated appropriately.
