I tried madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r3698-20080604 on an ACER 5050-4697 (AMD64
based) laptop with an AR5007EG device.
Running kernel 2.6.24-rc3 (x86_64) on a mostly Debian/Etch system.
Loading the module in the standard way, I can scan but consistently fail
to connect using wifi-radar (1.9.8) or dhclient3 (3.0.4-13).
But loading with autocreate=none and then creating the VPA with
wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta
works fine! dhcleint3 returns a warning (in all cases): wifi0: unknown
hardware address type 801
there are no other warnings.
