Some news here: next day changed AP WEP authentication to "Open OR
SharedKey", and ath5k client to use open method. This resulted in
successful association with AP, however DHCP client was not getting
address from AP. Disabled IPv6, as there were warnings about not having
IPv6 devices around. Not much better.
Then decided to move all home devices towards WPA-PSK: this worked like a
charm, everything so far is very nice. Must be lack of testing for WEP
part in driver, I believe. Having option of WPA is partially satisfying.
