Correct. The code that's been contained in said snapshot was outdated and
no longer maintained.

Please be more specific. Exactly what tarball did you get, what steps did
you take to build it, and what are the error messages you get?

AR5006 does not require the special snapshot, it is only required for
AR5007. However, chances are that lspci mis-identifies your AR5007-based
card as AR5006, as explained in #1192.
